The district has been described as the small 'Lithuanian Montmartre' of Vilnius, and declared independence in 1997, much like Christiana in Copenhagen ... What can be more strange than an independent and rebellious republic situated right in the centre of Vilnius, which is one of the two European capitals of culture 2009 (alongside Linz in Austria)?
