Nick Clegg defeats PM Cameron to Spectator 'Politician of the Year' prize

The Spectator political magazine held its yearly Parliamentarian of the Year Awards ceremony this week and it threw up a couple of interesting results – principal of which was the Liberal Democrat leader and Deputy PM Nick Clegg beating off the Conservative PM David Cameron to 'Politician of the Year'. Ouch.

The title of 'Newcomer of the Year' unsurprisingly went to Caroline Lucas, who at the General Election swapped Brussels for Westminister to become the UK’s first Green MP.

Margaret Thatcher was crowned the 'Statesman of the era', while the Labour party left with two of the main awards: 'Parliamentarian of the Year' (Ed Balls) and 'Campaigner of the Year' (Ed Miliband).

The award for 'Double act of the Year' went to the Treasury double-act of Chancellor George Osborne and Treasury Chief Secretary Danny Alexander, but it wasn’t all gloom for Cameron after being beaten to second place by his 'partner' – he won the
'Speech of the Year' prize for his "big comprehensive offer to the Lib Dems" and the apology for Bloody Sunday.
