Pope sends message to Iran's Ahmadinejad
Pope Benedict XVI has sent a personal message to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, the president of the Pontifical Council for Inter-Religious Dialogue, hand-delivered a letter from the Pontiff when he met with Ahmadinejad on November 9 in Teheran. Cardinal Tauran was in Iran for the latest in a series of talks between Vatican officials and Shi’ite Muslim leaders.
The contents of the Pope’s message to Ahmadinejad were not disclosed. The Iranian government has, on several occasions, sought to enlist the support of the Vatican in its diplomatic conflicts with the US and European nations. While indicating a willingness to act as mediators, Vatican diplomats have declined to become directly involved in the international dispute over Iran's development of a nuclear capacity. The Holy See has, however, argued consistently against nuclear proliferation.
